Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, largest economy, and leading oil producer. It plays a major political and economic role in Africa and wields significant influence in regional bodies such as the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The country’s commercial center, Lagos, is among the world’s largest cities, with an annual economic output surpassing that of many African countries.
By 2050, Nigeria is poised to overtake the United States as the world’s third most populous country, with a population projected to exceed 400 million. At 216 million inhabitants as of mid-2020, Nigeria is currently the world’s sixth most populous.
While working on an investment research project a couple of years ago during my graduate studies at the University of Houston, C.T. Bauer College of Business, I built and ran a forecast model that showed how dangerously close Nigeria was to ballooning the trade deficit. Other financial benchmarks showed the country was on life support.
The painful truth is that after so many years of neglect and maladministration, the floodgates have been breached and the country is about to get hit with a heavy doze of hurt if we let the usual suspects back in power in this 2023 election.
After my Presidential campaign came to an end, I started receiving calls from Abia State, the land of my forebears. They urged me to serve them as a Senator in the National Assembly, Abuja.
My initial response was to decline the request.
But as I reminiscence about my childhood Christmas holiday memories in my village of Ohanku Ndoki in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State, especially when we trekked to the farm and harvested cassava from our farms to make garri, it occurred to me that my people took pride in their labor. For centuries, they managed to be self sufficient and not ask for handout.
A sense of pride washed through me as I realized that I came from a long tradition of Ndoki people who are famous for their undiluted core of family, faith and fortitude.
Over the last couple of decades, government has failed to provide basic infrastructures for communities like my village, and hence stripped these noble communities of their pride and humanity.
So many communities in Abia State have remained in a perpetual state of paralysis due to poor governance and maladministration.
After a rather deep reflection and introspection, I resolved to once again, answer the call of my people in these troubling times.
I am happy to announce that I am currently a Candidate for Nigeria Senate representing Abia South Senatorial District.
As a Senator, I will dedicate my time and resources to bringing growth and opportunities to communities in Abia State.
We must begin to write a new chapter in “God’s Own State”.
As a man of faith, Godswill is a member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM) and volunteers as a committee head in God’s Men of Valor (GOMV).
